Placa de Sant Jaume is one of the most beautiful squares of the Gothic Quarter and may be considered the heart of the Old Town.
In the Middle Ages, the Cathedral of St. James stood here, then it was demolished, and it was decided to build a square on this site. The appearance of the square dates from 1823
There are several administrative buildings, including the Barcelona City Hall and the Government of Catalonia, on the square as well as many souvenir shops and cafes.
In ancient times, the Roman Forum stood, and its remains still can be admired in the neighboring Carrer Paradis.
